Flanging is similar to the Phaser effect in that the signal is split into two paths, one not affected and the other affected by being modulated. The main difference is that the Flanger has a longer delay time (typically 5ms to 15ms). In early phasers the output was not fed back into the input, though later phasers have this, flanges have always fed some of the output back into the input.
This gives an effect of several peaks and notches moving across the frequency spectrum under control of the LFO.
Oh and Flanging was alledgedly invented by the Beatles, when someone accidently touched the flange rim on a tape reel.
Setting Explanation
Speed
How fast the notches are moved
Depth or Width
How far the notches are moved. The larger the depth, the more pronounced the sound is. The maximum additional delay that is added to the input signal.
Resonance or feedback
How much of the output is fed back into the input
Delay
The minimum delay used on the fed back signal as the delay changes.
Mix or Intensity
The level of the delayed signal and hence the depth of the notches.
Waveform
Some flangers let you choose between sine and triangle wave forms.
Flanger Tips
-
Flangers should be inserted prior to reverb and delay in the effects chain.
-
Flanging works best on harmonically rich sounds, like overdriven guitar, though it is also suitable for clean guitar, drums and vocals.
-
Flangers can cause their own distortion, since part of the output is fed back into the input. To reduce this the input level needs to be brought down.
-
Flangers can also be noisy, so even when no signal is applied, you can still hear any noise flanged.
-
High resonance gives a "jet plane" like effect.
-
Turn depth up and rate down for a slow dramatic sweep
-
Turn depth and rate to halfway and apply to pads for a shimmering effect
-
Too much feedback makes the sound artificial and metallic
-
Drums sound great with a slow to medium flange for a brief section, (not the whole track though, it soons gets tiring)
- On Machine Gun ine gun drum intros \ fills, flanging can be used for an interesting effect.
- Using Flange with other effects like Chorus and \ or Phaser can lead to an interesting effect (but can end up sounding horrible).
