-Kick drum & bass separation in the mix

Kick Drum and Bass EQ Technique

Duplicate your kick drum & bass tracks so you have two tracks for each

Remove all the low end from track 1

Remove all the high end from track 2

Blend them together

This way you have maximum control over the top and bottom end

Kick / Bass Separation

The frequencies below are a rough guide

Try a free VST called Voxengo to pin point specific frequencies: http://www.voxengo.com/product/SPAN/

Kick

Listen for the click or wack of the beater up top between 2 & 4 kHz

Look for the thump in the chest in the bottom between 50 & 70 Hz

Kicks can be huge sounds to make a room try cutting a little between 450 kHz & 600 Hz

Bass

Chill the bass out where the fundamental of the kick thump is 60 Hz is a good place to start

Vice versa chill the kick out where the bass is happening

There might be some frequency in the bass that's below the kick i.e sub bass between 40 & 50 Hz

Plugins such as Waves' RBass can add sub into a sound by adding harmonics (you could just use an additional synth sound though)

And also a good bit of low end energy between 80 & 100 Hz

Above and beyond this you have mid bass upto around 250 Hz (this shouldn't overlap your kick to much but be aware of it's effect on other sounds)

Parallel Compression  (Often referred to as the 'New York' sound)

Set up a compressor on an fx send channel

Compress the hell out of it i.e 10:1 ratio

Send a little of the signal (same way you would with a reverb or delay)

This way you mix a heavily compressed signal in with the original track

Sidechain Compression

Use a sidechain compressor to duck the bass when the kick drum hits (creates really cool sound and gells the two together)

There are lots of tutorials on you tube if don't know how to do this
