The old skool sampled breaks we know and love come from recordings of live drums which consist of:
An array of mics (on individual kit pieces, overheads and room)
Gating
Compression
External processing i.e efffects etc
Not to mention the subtlties in the playing! (See the article of programming for that)
Recreate that ambience in your own original breaks:
Create a sub mix of
all your drum tracks
Feed the submix through a stereo room reverb - gives a nostalgic feel
where everythings in the same room
Compress everything together
EQ lows are rolled off below 50hz, and highs above 8khz
Add samples of record
static or noise
Small amount of plate reverb
Large amount of a small ambient reverb
Finally a little distortion or saturation might be cool
